In partnership with Conectas Human Rights, the IDDD produced a diagnosis on the effective criminal defense in Brazil

In July 2012, the IDDD was invited by the Open Society Foundations to participate in the group of Latin American organizations responsible for carrying the research “Effective Criminal Defense in Latin America”. In partnership with Conectas Human Rights, the Institute developed a survey which resulted in a diagnosis about this subject in Brazil. The first phase of the investigation was based on a study of national legislation (constitutional and infra constitutional) and a subsequent comparison between legislative provisions and the practice of Brazilian criminal proceedings. Then, a field research was carried out over two months, listening to different agents of law – judges, prosecutors, public defenders, private and defense lawyers and police delegates.
